Hotel del Coronado: San Diego's Most Iconic Wedding Setting
If you've spent any time in San Diego, you've seen the Del — that sprawling, red-roofed Victorian resort on Coronado Island that looks like it was built specifically to be photographed. As a San Diego wedding videographer who has filmed at the Del multiple times, I can tell you: this venue rewards preparation. Here's everything I know.
Why the Del Films Beautifully
The Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, and that Victorian architecture — the white wood, the steeply pitched red roof, the turrets — creates a natural backdrop that needs no decoration. On film, it reads as timeless rather than dated. The warm tones of the building play extremely well against both the blue Pacific and the golden hour sky.
Light: When to Plan Your Ceremony
The Del sits on the west-facing Coronado coastline, which means late afternoon ceremonies get the full benefit of golden hour light coming off the Pacific. I always recommend ceremony start times between 4:30–5:30 PM for spring and fall weddings, and 5:00–6:00 PM in summer.
What to Know Before You Book
- The Del works with approved vendor lists — confirm your videographer is approved early.
- Beach ceremonies require coordination with hotel event staff on wind and tide timing.
- The Victorian Ballroom is one of the most beautiful reception spaces in San Diego — dimly lit in a warm, flattering way.
- Drone permits at Coronado require additional coordination due to nearby Naval Air Station North Island airspace.
- Plan for an extra 30 minutes of portrait time — the sheer number of distinct settings within the property means you'll always wish you had more.
Best Spots for Film-Worthy Moments
Beyond the main beach ceremony lawn: the colonnade walkway between the main building and the beach, the Crown Room's famous chandeliers, the ocean-facing balconies of the historic building for twilight portraits, and the palm-lined path along the southern side of the property.
